Spotlight On: SAIC Solidarity 29 — 07

Leo Smith, managing editor of F Newsmagazine, interviews Nadia Frierson and Nicholas Zepeda, two of the student organizers at the heart of the new activist organization at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, SAIC Solidarity.

This summer, SAIC Solidarity facilitated and published two letters, one from staff and another from students, calling for the leadership at SAIC to address the school’s failure to center equity and diversity in the face of institutional racism and unethical organizational practices at the school. More recently they have also put up the Black Faculty, Alumni, and Community Supporters Letter on their website. At the time of posting, there are 718 signatures on the website from the SAIC community in solidarity with the movement.

Spotlight On: Kathryn Schaffer 22 — 07

Kathryn Schaffer, coordinator of science classes at the School for the Art Institute of Chicago, wrote to administration and faculty describing her position on the inadequacy of the “Make Ready” framework for returning to campus during COVID-19, citing the lack of expert involvement in risk assessment and crisis management, along with the unique risks SAIC faces and concrete shortcomings of the “Make Ready” plan. Kathryn’s comments have been intentionally circulated within the school’s network, reaching students and faculty more widely, so we reached out to her to have a conversation expanding on some of the points she brought up.
